First Five Strategy: Quote Pair-Share

Looking for a simple way to spark meaningful conversation right at the start of class? Try Quote Pair-Share.
Begin by sharing a thought-provoking or inspirational quote from the First Five. Give students a few seconds to read or listen, then have them turn to a partner for a quick one to two-minute conversation to reflect and interpret its meaning.
To keep things moving and focused, use one of our timers to set the pace. This helps create urgency while keeping the activity structured and efficient.
What makes this strategy so powerful is how accessible it is. Thereโs no pressure to have the โrightโ answer. Instead, students get the chance to share their perspective, hear someone elseโs, and build understanding through conversation.
Not only does this activity help strengthen student connections, but it also builds essential skills like active listening, communication, and confidence in sharing ideas.
Have a little extra time? Invite a few pairs to share their thoughts with the class. Youโll often hear a wide range of interpretations, which can lead to deeper discussion and new ways of thinking.
Itโs quick. Itโs simple. And itโs a great way to bring a little more meaning and connection into the start of your class.

"This was the best learning experience Iโve ever been a part of. Iโve sat through, and even led, workshops that missed the mark. Nothing here fell short. It flowed gracefully, engaged the audience, and renewed my faith in this work."
