Educator Corner
Utilizing Timers to Make the Time Count!

One simple move that can completely change your First Five activities? Use a timer.

Whether you are facilitating Questions, Quick Connects, Check-Ins, or discussions around Quotes and Videos, adding a visible countdown brings focus and energy to the room.

Timers create urgency in a healthy way. Students know they only have a short window, so they get to the point faster, listen more closely, and collaborate more intentionally. Instead of drifting conversations, you get sharper thinking and stronger engagement.

There is also research behind it. Time constraints can actually boost creativity and critical thinking. When students know every second counts, they prioritize what matters most.

Try giving partners 60 seconds each. Try a two-minute small group brainstorm. Try a 30-second reflection before sharing out.

You will be surprised how much depth can happen in a short amount of time.

Sometimes structure creates freedom. And sometimes a simple timer is the structure your First Five needs.
