First Five Strategy: What's That Feeling?
Sometimes, there is an emotion within one of our Check-Ins from the First Five that the students misunderstand. One strategy I've used is to ask students to show me, using a simple thumbs-up or thumbs-down, if they know what that feeling word means. If numerous students have a thumbs-down, I'll take a few moments to talk about what this word means. The "What's That Feeling?" organizer is a great way to do this.
Start by sharing the word and what it means. Write the word in large letters inside of the rectangle in the middle. In the top left quadrant, share what the word means. In the bottom left quadrant, have students offer ideas of what this emotion may look like if someone is experiencing it. In this section, you can write the words, draw a picture, or paste an image (emojis work great). On the right side of the organizer, share or brainstorm three similar words that can go with that feeling. Finally, discuss strategies to manage this emotion in the bottom right quadrant. Using student input for these sections is always great, but feel free to share your thoughts and experiences!
