Educator Corner
Student-Led Check-Ins

While in New York on a coaching trip recently, I observed one of my favorite check-ins to date. As coaches, when we come into classrooms, our goal is to build on existing systems and model strategies that help take The First Five to the next level.

A choir teacher already had an incredible check-in routine in place. A student would come to the front of the room and invite classmates to share their celebrations. As students raised their hands, the student facilitator would say the student’s name and prompt the class by saying, β€œEveryone say hi to ___,” and the class would respond together.

After each student shared, the class celebrated by cheering and offering support for something meaningful in that student’s life. This routine created a culture of acceptance, belonging, and celebration that was felt by everyone in the room. The energy, connection, and care between students and teacher made it a moment I will never forget.

I loved this approach and truly enjoy learning from teachers as I travel and coach in classrooms across the country.

We always love hearing about how you are connecting with and celebrating each student in your classrooms. Maybe you will be the next one featured and celebrated in a future Educator Corner!

"This was the best learning experience I’ve ever been a part of. I’ve sat through, and even led, workshops that missed the mark. Nothing here fell short. It flowed gracefully, engaged the audience, and renewed my faith in this work."
