Educator Corner
Mindfulness: Not Perfect, Just Purposeful

Let’s talk about something that can feel almost impossible in a school day, slowing down.

I know, we’ve got bells ringing and bell ringers, papers flying, and sometimes kids too. Schools are basically highways where everything is go go go. But every now and then, we’ve got to hit the brakes and say, β€œWhoa, whoa, whoa.”

Let’s be clear, mindfulness isn’t about perfection. It’s about pausing on purpose and being present. You don’t have to be a yoga master or Master Yoda. It’s simply a reset, a breath before the brainwork begins.

That pause helps students recognize when they’re overwhelmed and what to do about it. We’re teaching them how to self regulate, refocus, and choose calm over the chaos. These aren’t easy skills, but they are skills we can practice together, skills that show up in areas far beyond the classroom.

Mindfulness is also a powerful transition tool. Coming in from recess? Use a mindful moment to settle the room. Switching subjects? Clear the brain and reset. About to take a test? Take a few deep breaths together before you begin.

And let’s be honest, we need it too, so let’s build it in. It doesn’t have to be quiet and it definitely doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to be purposeful.

So tomorrow, stop, breathe, and be. Be present, be intentional, and be mindful of the moments where a pause can make all the difference.
